St. Andrews Missionary Baptist Church

Kansas City, KS

On August 4, 2010, congregational members heard a pop and crack looked up to see cracks in the ceiling drywall separating. Moving quickly, congregation members moved chairs and tables out of the sanctuary, moments before the entire roof system collapsed.

GuideOne Insurance was notified of the collapse on August 5 with an adjuster on site that afternoon. The severity of the loss triggered GuideOne Insurance’s large loss division and GuideOne Taylor Ball Construction (GTB) services.

GuideOne Insurance large loss unit began its cause and origin investigation into the collapse while GTB began the emergency services clean up and site security. An independent structural engineer was retained to inspect and provide an expert opinion as to the structural integrity of the remaining fellowship hall and office building.

Once the structural engineering of the fellowship hall and offices was complete, GTB began working with city officials in an effort to re-open the structure for occupancy and to set up a temporary sanctuary in the fellowship hall. GTB also established the ground work for the selective demo of the sanctuary roof trusses in support of the cause and origin investigation.

Once the sanctuary site is cleared, a new sanctuary will be designed and constructed on the original footprint. Construction of the new church should take approximately 8 months from the date a building permit is secured from the city building department.
